Strong profitability recovery highlights external Middle East conflict hit
Buy at $170.52, roughly 26% below the post-split equivalent of the 2025 peak, with neither of my falsifiers having fired. AI disintermediation is not showing up in the numbers: AI-driven bookings remain under 1% of room nights, OpenAI pulled native ChatGPT checkout in March 2026 and now routes transactions back through partner apps, and Booking stays the merchant of record on close to three quarters of bookings, which protects both the take rate and the float the thesis rests on. There is no rate-parity damage either, with Q2 room nights of 325 million up 5%, gross bookings up 9% to $51bn, and direct traffic in the mid-60% range, so the slowdown from 9% in Q4 2025 is long-haul weakness tied to the Middle East conflict rather than hotels winning back the channel. The margin of safety I said was missing now exists at roughly mid-teens forward earnings, alongside $3.7bn of buybacks in the quarter and a transformation programme targeting $650m of run-rate savings by end-2027, so the thing I was avoiding has become the thing I am being paid to hold.
